Guide for South African Pilgrims

Flights from Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban

From Johannesburg you can fly non-stop to Jeddah or connect through a Gulf hub. From Cape Town and Durban most pilgrims connect through a hub such as Dubai, Doha or Abu Dhabi and land in Jeddah or Madinah. Send us your final flight number, not the first leg, so the driver tracks the right arrival.

Arriving Tired After a Long Flight

Saudi Arabia is one hour ahead of South Africa. After a long flight and often a connection, the last thing a family needs is a taxi queue. Your driver is already waiting, helps with the bags and takes you straight to your hotel entrance, so the elderly and children can rest before Umrah. See the full route on our Jeddah Airport to Makkah taxi page.

Ihram, Miqat and Madinah First

If you fly to Jeddah, you enter ihram before the plane passes the miqat; on a Gulf connection many pilgrims change at the hub before boarding the last flight. If you go to Madinah first, you enter ihram at Abyar Ali (Dhul Hulayfah) on the way to Makkah. On every Madinah to Makkah taxi the driver stops there for 30–40 minutes.

Groups, Tour Packages and Payment

Many South African groups travel with a tour operator and a shared bus. Families who want their own car can book just the transfers they need, and larger groups can take a Hiace, a 22-seat Coaster or a 49-seat bus. Payment is in Saudi riyals (SAR), cash or online, mostly after the ride.
